Gripsholm Castle stands next to the small town of Mariefred, with its winding streets and historic church. The castle was built by King Gustav Vasa, rebuilt by King Karl IX, and extended by Queen Hedvig Eleonora and King Gustav III.

The castle is home to Sweden's best-preserved rooms from the time of King Gustav Vasa and one of Europe's best-preserved 18th century theatres, which King Gustav III had installed in one of the castle's round renaissance towers.
