Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm Castle is home to five hundred years of history. It features Sweden's finest examples of state apartments from the time of the House of Vasa, as well as one of Europe's best preserved 18th century theatres. Other highlights include the Swedish State Portrait Collection, where visitors can see Sweden's famous faces.

The castle was built in the 16th century at the initiative of King Gustav Vasa. There are well-preserved rooms from that era, the most famous being Duke Karl's Chamber.

Another attraction is Gustav III's Theatre, which the king had installed in one of the castle's round renaissance towers.

The portrait collection at Gripsholm Castle is internationally renowned. This is the Swedish State Portrait Collection, including paintings of historical figures dating from King Gustav Vasa's reign to the present day.

Gripsholm is a popular destination, and is close to Hjorthagen Nature Reserve and Mariefred with its shops, cafés and restaurants.
